Libresse reaches out to make the ultimate difference

The start of menstruation is a major event in every young girl’s life. Some greet it with joy or relief, while others feel bewildered, afraid and ashamed.

As a feminine care brand that is trusted by moms and daughters around South Africa, Libresse (newly rebranded from Lifestyle) believes that young girls need to ‘LIVE FEARLESS’. That means not being held back by the challenges of menstruation and puberty and grasping opportunities like a good education to reach their full potential.

Yet, UNESCO estimates that 1 in 10 African girls miss school when they have their periods. In some areas, they can miss up to five school days per month, further compromising an education that is difficult enough due to poor facilities and teaching. South Africa is no different and it is estimated that around seven million girls miss school every month because they don’t have access to hygiene products. Sadly, many young girls choose to boycott class because sanitary pads are an unaffordable luxury!

That’s why, from May in the lead up to world Menstrual Hygiene day on 28 May, Libresse will be offering both support and education to these young South Africans – whilst also appealing to those from more affluent backgrounds to help to provide young women in underprivileged schools with access to sanitary pads. Through its HELP A YOUNG GIRL TO LIVE FEARLESS campaign, Libresse is encouraging young girls to help a “sister in need”. An order form will be sent home to affluent school goers encouraging parents to purchase sanitary pads off an order form supplied by Libresse. The school then donates these pads to an underprivileged school of their choice.

What’s more, is that the school that collects the most pads will nominate underprivileged schools of their choice to receive a revamp of the girls’ bathrooms to the value of R150 000. At the same time, Libresse is piloting a “LIVE FEARLESS” GIRL TALKS campaign in 50 schools across Gauteng.

Libresse facilitators will be visiting these schools to educate and talk to learners about menstruation and the challenges facing young women today.

Libresse believes in building relationships between women and, especially, between mothers and daughters. During talks, facilitators will not only share personal experiences to guide young girls, but also encourage them to confide in their mothers, thereby helping to establish more powerful connections between moms and daughters. Girls will also be able to dedicate a ‘Live Fearless message’ to mom via a message booth at the schools.
